Hiya, great game btw, really cool but I got some ideas + adjustments i thought of rn for you:
Two options for selecting nations: completely random - the player doesn't choose who to select but a random nation is selected which makes the game more like a game or the one we got rn which is more sandbox. I think this is second most important thing, simple but this would add a lot to the game.
A feature to get rid of a card: if the player doesn't want it, being able to put it in the trash would be very nice. I don't want to unite!
BORDERS! I think this is the most urgent update required due to it making the game look way better. Simple addition - border is a darker colour of the nations colour that is 1 pixel big. Larger maps might be 2 pixels to look better. (and if the nation is full black or full white the border would be the inverse of the colour, you cannot currently see white nations). Also borders are not counted if they are next to the sea.
Cities: This is also important! Adding a card that allows for a cities to be placed in a nation's lands and a captital city when you first create a new nation or split, cities should be a lighter colour of the original nation colour or dark. Also to furthur extend this you could create new cards for cities like cities expansion into a new pixel (should have a limit for number of cities and size -> could maybe expand this limit if more technology -> future idea keep reading), if two cities touch they can unite or adding razing cities but i'm rambling on. A little side info box like for nations could be added - their origins, name, land, area what turn they were establised etc.
Ideologies: nations have ideologies, monarchy, democracy, republic, dictatorship, etc. There will be a card that is more rare that changes goverment type: The leader can therefore change into a council or president or king. Gives more flavour. Splits can therefore have a higher chance of getting a different goverment. To extend this, each goverments have their own special cards in addition to their general cards that everyone has.
Puppets/vassals: Adding a card that vassels another nation but only if the other nation is smaller (or technolgically weaker, see next idea) and is close to the nation. This card will not be avaliable for nations where these conditions do not apply. If borders are created then the vassel will be the same colour as the owner. There will also be a freedom card obviously.
Technology: major point in all of civilisation is technology - All new nations starts at a fixed value but a card chooses to increase a technology of a nation or reduce it. A split will make the seceeding nation have the same technolgy of it's parent state. You can do a whole lot with this one like increasing the chance of good cards to higher technological nations and decrease severity of future implementations like natural disasters. Or unlock new cards when at a new technology.
Map creator: kinda obvious to add, then a place where we can all publish our maps and get other peoples maps. But also in the map creator allow us to make premade nations so when you start it won't be from stratch and we can get more historical sernarios.
Uniting with another nation changes: Requires close proximity and the larger nation becomes the main country afterwards - in my games I noticed how silly it was that a small split state would 'unite' with the way larger state. Two options to fix this, larger nation annexs the smaller nation OR they create a new state like, 'x' - 'y' with the larger nations colour or make a new colour. Final idea to fix unions are adding both of these, If the nations have the same origin, the larger one will annex the smaller one but if the origins are different they unite together.
Population: Could add a population which shows each nations population, this would make the game complex and I don't fully know how to add this without it being stupid but population is a idea I thought of.
Ages: I know you're planning of historical era but might I give you an idea - Golden ages, normal ages and dispair ages each historcal era for each nation, basicaly Civ 6 ages. This is only aesthetic and flavour but you might be able to add on this or make it better.
The white uncivilized lands could be changed into tribal lands, could be it's own large nation. By own large nation I do mean small tribal communities and small areas but they are all tagged together. this could bring life to the completely empty lands and bring more lore to the worlds like the tribes are fighting back, They shouldn't get their own leader and their traits should just be tribal (could be tribal goverment if ideologies are added).
Relations: If a nation had a stable border with another nation then their relations with each other is increased each turn to a maximum or if a nation is consistantly expanding everywhere then they would get negative relations - this would be purely aesthetic and be viewed in a special map mode and not affect the game directly.
Option to enable name of the nations over their land, the map is a bit too empty rn.
Renameable Origins.
Empty lands should be peach coloured.
Make the drawing limit bar verticly on the left of the screen pls
When the map ends at the sides it just continues to be blue sea, I think it would be fun if it was a tabletop, a table with stuff on it and should probably stop the player's camera from wondering off to the void. Or make a border around the map.
When the world map eventually comes or future versions or whatever it would be dope for the map to loop.
More terrains: marshlands, desert, tundra, forest etc.
This is a bug fix not an idea but the new leader card does nothing.
Another bug is that I cannot save onto a prexisting save unless I write the identical name of the save.
Stop giving out the card create new nation once there is not enough new land to create a new nation
Be able to change drawing size by pressing 1, 2 or 3 on the keyboard.
Move camera by mouse - moving the mouse to the sides of the screens moves the camera.
Change turns to years -> more immersion and allows for historical eras.
be able to stop drawing even if you have some extra left. Some sort of end turn or something. Also for expansion have two options - only nations expansions or empty land expansion.
Make the starting nation inital expansion smaller, too big. And make split smaller too! i want to make small city states type succession. If there was a larger one it would be a civil war, could add civil war/revoliton card Or add two different succession cards -> 1 small, 1 big.
This is too far/complex for the game but some stuff that would make the game way more realistic and immersive would be regional impact, e.g. say relations were a thing then multiple peaceful nations would dislike the aggresive leader even if the aggresive leader didn't take land from them directly. Or technologicaly, if there is a high technolgical civilisaition then they would create technological spread tech (more positive tech cards more often) to their less tech nations around them regionally and not across the map.
I had some other stuff about histrorical eras like you were writting about up top but I forgot it and this list is way too long already, great game btw!!
this game is great, but the split card can really ruin things. especially considering it feels like it happens more often to small nations. it makes it hard to get a big nation going and when i have a big nation finally i end up Reluctant to do anything with it because a couple unlucky split cards and it gets reduced to a shell and there's nothing that can be done about it. it would be much more fun and interesting if there was a way to interact with what cards were coming or if split was made much less common. i think it would be good to at least swap the rarity of the small split and full split. the small split is way less of a thorn in your side, but it feels very rare compared to the full extremely destructive split.
I want to love this game so so much, it's a great concept, but if we don't have some way to skip cards or have balance it's just a chore to play, I want to do X with Y nation but I can't because "uh oh split card!" alright, sure, i guess I'll just try to rp some reason or revolt and get them next turn. "Uh oh ANOTHER SPLIT CARD" and repeat, trying to make the game enjoyable is near impossible for me right now.
Yeah, you're the second person to say that, so I'm thinking there's something up with the late game I need to look into. Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for playing
Hi, really cool idea for a game. Me and my sister have had a lot of fun playing this. We came up with some suggestions as we played it. We were playing the game competitively as strange as that sounds, so these suggestions might seem skewed by that.
-We thought that expansion of a nation should be based on the size of said nation. So for example if a nation draws an expansion card, it will grow by 2x more if it is size 2000 compared to if it was size 1000.
-We thought there should be a skip button for union cards or new nation cards. maybe you could trade that in for a random expansion card?
-We thought that there should be an option to only use so much expansion. if you draw a large expansion card you could do a small amount of expansions then move onto the next turn.
-we were thinking that a nation should be able at save up its expansion. any expansion not used should go into a bank, maybe you only get to keep 1/2 or 1/3 of the expansion that you don't use? We thought it could represent a nation growing wealthy or powerful in peace and being able to punch above its weight when it comes time to expand or resolve splits in the nation sooner.
-some sort of ledger that you could see all the current nations would be nice, even if its only to see the collection of small nations that are hidden away.
-We thought that nations could be assigned to a player along side giving them a name and colour, and that perhaps there would be a "player" map mode. this could work for single player as well by making it an "alliance" map mode that could let people make power blocks within there world
-we also thought that nations that split should be able to expand into the other half of the nation a bit easier, like it should cost a bit less expansion. maybe that would only last for 10 turns or so representing a civil war/rebellion ending in a more permanent break up of the nation?
-It would also be nice to have an undo button for the turn that was just played (we unionised countries we didn't mean to a few times)
please just ignore all of this if it clashes with your plans for the game. Regardless we are really interested to see where you take this game. Best of luck!
Hey, that's awesome!! I love the competitive gameplay you've made. Also I love the suggestions, and I was actually already planning on adding some of them to the next update lol. I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and thanks for playing
By late game the new nation card ends up becoming the split card but now it crosses borders, i like it when i fill the map but after that it gets a bit annoying.
Also, i accidentally misclick on a place and im then forced to do what the card says which i dont like and i try to fix it but then it happens again.
IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A GAME LIKE THIS FOR AGES, I HAVE ALREADY SPENT QUITE A LARGE NUMBER OF HOURS ON IT. HOWEVER, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS I FIND ANNOYING: I DONT LIKE THE INEVITABILITY OF THE SPLIT CARDS, THEY APPEAR TOO FREQUENTLY IMO AND MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO CREATE LARGE EMPIRES, LIMITING THE CONTROL OF THE PLAYER OVER HIS OWN WORLD AND SCENARIOS. I THINK IT WOULD BE A LIFE IMPROVING CHANGE TO SIMPLY LET THE PLAYER SWAP ANOTHER CARD IF THE ONE HE GOT DOESNT GO IN THE DIRECTION HE PLANNED FOR HIS NATIONS. ALSO, FOR SOME REASON, THE GAME CRASHES AS SOON AS I TRY TO SAVE A SCENARIO, IT MAY NOT BE A GAME PROBLEM BUT MINE, BUT IDK. ILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS GAME.
Hey, I'm really glad you like the game. I think I am going to make some kind of skip mechanic soon. Although, I don't think I want to be able to skip infinitely whenever I want, but I do think earning skips through some kind of point system might be more balanced. Either way it's on my to do list lol. As for the crashing, is it a specific map that crashes when you save? Some of the maps are larger than the others, and might take more to save. I'm thinking depending on how powerful your computer is that could be the issue. Either way let me know, and thanks again for playing
Thank you for answering, it's most definitely my pc's fault: i have a slow one and it crashes on every map as i try to save lmao. As for the skip mechanic, i was thinking you could add a sandbox mode where the player has full control over the cards, this way the "normal" mode can still be played under the card's influence without impacting on balance, keeping the two things in a separate way that lets you develop the game with more freedom.
You should add capitals, major cities, a way to only have the brush attack one nation, a random name generator, and a AI mode where you create the countries and then they fight
Hey, thanks for the suggestions. I definitely have plans for some of these already. As far as the AI mode is concerned tho, I don't think I'll be going in that direction, but I'd recommend checking out a game called Ages of Conflict. It's all about AI nations fighting each other, and is actually one of the inspirations for my game. Hope that helps, and thanks for playing
I'm going to be adding a list of "dead" nations you've made and have been wiped off the map to be revived, but I can definitley make a list of preset nations for people starting out also. I like that idea
I've spent a handful of hours on this already! I'm really into this idea and look forward to seeing it develop. I would really love to see a timelapse feature at the "end" of a game where you can watch the political and cultural maps grow and expand over time, kind of like the end game map time lapse at the end of Civ 5.
That’s awesome!! Also I like that idea, and I’m definitely gonna see about making that work at some point. Civ 5 is literally my favorite game, so I’m very much on board lol

genius, but there is 1 thing could you please make an outline for the draw bar because it blends in with the surrounding nations.
make the game for website pls

I'm so sorry it's very very long to read!
Can you please do a version for Android ?
That would be very good
How on earth do I zoom out???

I've noticed a bug where when you get the "Union" card and select the same nation twice, it just vanishes and makes the territory it was on darker. h

Is there a way to skip a card
after some time of playing when i rename a nation it renames all the nations on the map.

cool game
Can you please make it available for android this is exactly what I've been looking for
Yes I want that too
By late game the new nation card ends up becoming the split card but now it crosses borders, i like it when i fill the map but after that it gets a bit annoying.

Great job on the game! I can't wait to see more :>
Perchance add a way to make the mouse bigger or smaller, i want to add more detail but cant
You're in luck!! Brush sizes are gonna be in the next update lol

That game is so fun!
Will you add this game to steam?
I do plan on releasing the full game on Steam once development is complete
There should be preset countries in this game
I'm going to be adding a list of "dead" nations you've made and have been wiped off the map to be revived, but I can definitley make a list of preset nations for people starting out also. I like that idea
This is quite entertaining but how come there isn't a North America or South America map?
The game is currently a work in progress, but I'll be adding new maps as I update the game, which will include maps of The Americas and much more
